Early on as a parent my biggest fear was that my children would repeat my mistakes. I heard all the quotes; "From one generation to the next." "History repeats itself." "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." In my parent workshops and keynote speeches I would talk about what I called the 90% rule. You have a 90% chance of being just like your parents. You see, at age 18, I went on a 13-year road of personal destruction. Shortly after I had children, I realized I had to change if history was not going to repeat itself. The worst day of my life was the day I realized I had become just like my father, but that was also the best day of my life. That was the day I realized thinking about it didn't work, taking action would. So I started on a road of personal construction when my first child was a year and a half old and I've been on that road ever since. Through the process I changed and taught others about parenting. Knowing the power of the 90% rule, I still had that fear in the back of my mind. It gets real tough and painful watching a son or daughter fall and seeing your biggest fear come true. There is a fine line between letting them learn the lesson and rescuing them. I remember writing an story for a Chicken Soup for the Soul book a number of years ago titled: Work on Yourself and Your Kids Will be Fine. When I look back, I realize that story was for me and it gave me the determination to continue working on myself. The biggest factor here is to trust the process...because that's what it is...a process. And when you're in the middle of it, it's hard to see or remember that. Now that my children are grown, I know it works and I'm back to sharing it with others. Let me know how I can help you.
